Popular Collage Artists

Max Ernst was a German artist, sculptor, visual artist and a poet. He had no professional training in arts but has become popular collage artists. In 1919 Ernst visited his friend Paul Klee and created paintings, block prints and collages, and also tried using mixed medium. His collages include Le Limacon de Chambre (1920) and The Postman Ceval (1932).

 

Man Ray better known as Emmanuel Radintzky was an American collage artist who invested most of his career in Paris. Best known in the art world for his avant-garde images, Man produced significant works in many different mediums and regarded himself a painter. Much like his peers Man likewise explored his skills and became prominent for his collage arts like Involute and The Revolving Doors (1916-1917), a compilation of ten collages.

 

Hannah Hoch has been the very first artist to make a photomontage. She was the very first woman social activists who based her artwork on identical sex couples, and women had been once again a main subject in her own work form. She created powerful statements on racial inequity. Some of her collages are Hochfinanz, Equilibre and Made for a Party (1923 -1936).

Along with artwork, Bearden was a composer, a cartoonist, social worker, a writer and a civil rights extremist. His collages were Pittsburg Memory, Return of the Prodigal Son as well as the Calabash (1964-1970).
