Budget Design Guide

What is the cheapest and most effective method of creating original audio recordings on a PC?
I have some guided visualisation material I want to dictate directly into my computer, accompanied by pre-recorded, or live recorded music/songs of my own.
Can I do this both cheaply and to a high quality standard without spending significant amounts of money?
I am on an extremely tight budget. The method / software must be good, or at least adequate, while also being cheap (or FREE!) and relatively easy for a computer user
(versus ‘techie’) to master and work with quickly.
Thanks!

[p.s. I already have, for example, VIAVOICE software, but that is mainly designed for recording and transcribing the spoken word into text - though there is a 'read back' facility which might be usable at a pinch?]
Hey Olly,
Try Audacity. It supports multi-track recording and can import music – and other audio – from multiple source.

It should be able to what that you need. The great thing is it’s open source and completely free.
