The Portland, Or., institution plans to put the money toward science building renovations on its campus that also include replacing chemical fume hoods. In all, the science building improvements, which are to provide an energy savings, are expected to cost $46.5 million, an announcement from this institution noted.
An award of $1.6 million in grant money was given to a Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, college. Their institute of environmental health sciences, which is a part of the National Institutes of Health, provided this institution the grant money so that the college can provide disaster preparedness training. The university’s Center for Bioterrorism and All-Hazards Preparedness, which is a part of a College of Osteopathic Medicine, would provide health and safety-related training in oil spill and other hazardous material responses. An institution, based in Philadelphia, Pa., was awarded $1 million in grant money. The US Department of Energy provided the grant as part of what’s known as an Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Program. The college plans to apply the grant money to environmental stewardship education and research, including a study of the energy savings provided by green roof systems and biofuels made with Great Plains grasses, the university’s grant announcement suggested.
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant in the amount of $.45 million was given to an Athens, Georgia, university. The grant money, awarded to Associate Professor Doug Peterson, is to be shared with US Geological Survey, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries researchers and is to be provided over the course of three years. Peterson is a fisheries research biologist. He and the others are to tag and monitor Federally protected Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon to determine their populations and threats between Georgia and the Carolinas.
