Broncos DJ Williams Suspended By NFL For DWI
The Denver broncos confront losing top tackler D.J. Williams to a league suspension after his second dwi arrest. The linebacker and defensive co-captain was indicted for driving drunk following being arrested in Denver early Friday morning, only a few hours before he was expected to report to work at Dove Valley.
It’s his 2nd such charge. He pleaded guilty in September 2005 to driving drunk and was instructed to complete 24 hours of community service. After that, he said he realized he needed to obtain a designated driver any time he went out partying, and the team supplies drivers to its participants but Williams did not make use of one Friday.
District attorney’s spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said Williams was stopped at 2:40 a.m. Friday for driving without headlights on. He was cited with DUI, a misdemeanor, together with driving lacking headlights. He was directed to show up in court Dec. 13.
Williams, a 7th-year professional from the University of Miami, most likely will be suspended for numerous games in football bets for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. San Diego receiver Vincent Jackson is serving a three-game suspension for numerous DUI busts, which has been lowered from a prior four-game penalty.
A conviction isn’t required for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend a player without pay. The league’s policy declares: “If the Commissioner finds that … the player has had prior drug or alcohol-related misconduct, increased discipline up to and including suspension may be imposed.” It could take some time for the league to examine Williams’ case, so there’s an opportunity he could still play Sunday.
Williams came merely briefly at the team’s headquarters just before noon Friday before driving off while his team mates were at practice. The Denver Broncos (2-6) encounter the NFL’s leading rushing squad Sunday when the Chiefs (5-3) visit Invesco Field
If he does not compete, other choices incorporate getting Wesley Woodyard or Joe Mays at his location at right inside linebacker or moving outside linebacker Mario Haggan back inside and playing Jarvis Moss on the outside. Not one of those options are much better than Williams, the fierce tackler whose leadership has been recognized richly by McDaniels and defensive coordinator Don Martindale in latest weeks.
Williams’ problem comes just as the Broncos were referring to getting healthy following their bye week and exuding an confidence about salvaging their season and gaining back into the AFC West contest. The Broncos have relied on Williams more seriously this year with outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil (chest) and Robert Ayers (foot) benched, and he’s reacted with a team-leading 3.5 sacks as well as a team-best 57 tackles, which set him on pace for a career-high 114.
The fact that Williams is a captain made his charge all the more frustrating to an organization which has been engulfed in negativity in the course of a monthlong skid that involved a 45-point loss at home to foe Oakland at the sportsbook.
