where can i find about leather handbag designing and making ? is there
any online course or e-books or any document that i can download. I
really want to know how Prada, Gucci handbag making step by step and
what kind of material they use ,what kind of machines, mock up
design, 3D design with CAD/CAM
Handbag design and manufacture is a very specialised field, there are degree courses that teach exactly this, I know the Royal College of Art do a 2 year MA in accessories, so this isn’t something you can easily pick up in your spare time.
Most of the work for this type of leatherwear is handcrafted. Concepts done by hand , then patterns drawn up for those designs. The reason its done by hand is because its a much more direct feel, its a piece of art above all and a machine lacks that interface. Although I have seen 3D CAD and rapid forming (rapid prototype) being used, this is very uncommon and used only as part of a design.
What I saw at the RCA was, then to use a cheap but stiff woven fabric to mock up the bag, to check that the patterns work, these are patterns are then transferred onto the leather which is then stitched together.
I am by no means an expert, but I’ve seen some of this process being done, and I understand why this can only be learnt by doing, like any other form of art. Its not something you can get a book and instantly become Anya Hindmarch (and check her out she’s a very famous bag designer).
