From 2001 thru 2004 MB really took a hit in reliability due to outsourcing most of the electrical systems and wiring harneses. My Dad has a 2003 S500. The car has been in the shop almost as much as it has been in his driveway. You will notice I did not say on the road. Almost every time he goes for a longer than 50 mile trip something electrical goes wrong. He is now in the process of filing a “lemon law” claim against MB for the continued problems with the electrical system.
HOWEVER, don’t count MB out just yet. Mid last year and this year MB effectively took control of their suppliers and has made massive improvements in the quality control of the electrical systems.
Lexus is one of the very best quality controlled cars on the market. They took aim at the MB E Class and nailed it to the wall.
I have driven both the MB and the Lexus. Right now today if I were going to go out and by a replacement for MY 1999 Mercedes 300SEL I would be very hard pressed to choose between the two.
Knowing that the problems have pretty much been resolved with the MB I would have to go back to the “bank vault security” of the Mercedes.
