Do you think it’s right for a town/city to tax college students for being in their town/city limits?

The city of Providence, RI has proposed to tax students at the four private colleges in the city – Johnson & Wales Univ., Brown Univ., Providence College and the Rhode Island School of Design – $150 dollars per semester just for being enrolled.

The mayor says the students live on land that is tax exempt (the four universities do pay the city voluntarily though) and that they use city services. The students say they support the city through the money they spend at businesses and by helping the community through various volunteer projects.

What do you think of such a proposal?

Personally it isn’t fair, if they are residing in the area yes they should pay taxes, but indirectly they are paying taxes when they pay tution, and when they pay rent based on sales taxes. RI is apparently becoming as greedy as King George did when this country rebelled from England.
