Design Small Dining Rooms

ideas on how to redesign my house?
Here’s a video of what my first floor looks like..Yes i know it is very messy and ugly….I need to update it! I like modern interior design, like Ikea, and stuff.
Also, I don’t know where my living room is because where it is now is a very awkward room. It is right beside the kitchen and is too small for any furniture, and no place for the TV. The other room is attached to the dining room which is also an awkward place for a living room. Help!!!

I’d say that the room that your TV is located with the big sofa is located in the wrong room. Yes you have a chandler light in the dining room, but you can replace that with a modern fan and light combo, and move the dining set to the room with the fireplace. I’d put the TV on the wall where the book cases are, which is a very long room. I’d throw out the sofa, since it looks like it is from the mid 80′s it does look comfy though, really too big for that room, or move it to the larger room with the new location of the TV.
For a larger budget you may knock down the wall between the front door and largest room where the dining room is now, go into the basement and look if there is any supporting structure under it first, if so it may be a supporting structural wall. Modern homes are best with an open floor plan where rooms connect from one room to the next, this house is not designed that way.
There are a lot of shows throughout the USA that sell mid century modern furniture, and accessories like lights, fans, cabinets, chairs. There are only a few items at Ikea that work well for a long term, whereas second hand furniture desks, end tables etc. is higher quality and better design. I’d stay away form second hand furniture, since it often smells musty.
It looks though like most of your furniture is second hand or was donated by your family, or that you’ve had it for a while now.
For the layout you don’t need to occupy the current dining area with any furniture, just leave it as open space, less is more in modern design.
You may also try a color scheme, use either primary colors frequently or use an all black and white theme, the all black and white looks sophisticated, whereas the primary colors red yellow blue orange pink green ads life to a dull floor in the home, just coordinate pictures, abstract art, posters, prints, throughout all rooms. Currently it is all hoge poge with different eras of furniture all scattered throughout, you need one central theme. It looks great as a country home style, which is what I think you were going for with your last decoration.
