Find the length of x so that the total amount of canvas is needed for the sides and bottom is 384 ft^2?

I have a midterm tomorrow and one of the questions is this….

http://books.google.com/books?id=UY73OGqFMh4C&pg=PA248&lpg=PA248&dq=a+canvas+camping+tent+is+to+be+constructed+in+the+shape+of+a+pyramid+with+a+square+base.&source=bl&ots=3Td3i4UnTQ&sig=9O_ksmoPcWxNCa59XS1SN9fOt_o&hl=en&ei=TmGHS8_xFY3-tAOe3ZiGAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CA8Q6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=a%20canvas%20camping%20tent%20is%20to%20be%20constructed%20in%20the%20shape%20of%20a%20pyramid%20with%20a%20square%20base.&f=false

number 36. “designing a tent”

I know the answer is x=12 (answer was given to me by my professor), but i would like the steps on how to solve this just in case he changes the numbers on the midterm, and plus he likes to see work.

you want formula for surface area of a pyramid with a square base.
Each side of the pyramid is an isosceles triangle. There are 4 sides to this pyramid. You are given the height of the pyramid and the total surface area. First find the altitude of one of the side triangles.

Let x = length of side of the square base. Use Pythagorean theorem to get alt. of a side.
alt ^ 2 = (x/2) ^2 + 8^2 now take square root of both sides to get alt.
Total surface area = area of square base plus four times the area of a triangular side.
384 = x^2 + 4 (1/2)( x )(alt)
