Even Drivers With A Full Driving Licence Must Continue To Take Extra Care On The Roads
An average of seven deaths occurs on British roads every day and the cause of most of these deaths is dangerous driving. This problem is now being looked at by the government in the hopes that they can do something to solve it. A new maximum prison sentence of five years for dangerous driving was proposed by Jack Straw, the justice secretary in December 2009. At the moment the current maximum penalty is two years in prison.
It is an assumption that most of us make that it is the young or newly qualified drivers who are the only ones guilty of dangerous driving. However there are many drivers who have been found guilty of dangerous driving that have had their driving licences for a long time. A lot of people would actually fail their driving test if they had to take it now because of the fact that over the years they have picked up a lot of bad habits.
But there are courses specially designed for those who are worried about the state of their driving or that of a family member. Courses have been organised by the IAM (Institute Of Advanced Motoring in London. They have lessons and assessments which can help those with bad driving habits.
A lot of us would be amazed by the fact that we would more than likely fail a driving test if we took one now. Checking mirrors as much as is needed and observing speed restrictions are two things that we seem to put less emphasis on the longer we are driving. It is not only important that you check your mirror when turning, but it should also be checked when slowing down or speeding up. Extra vigilance can help towards saving lives. But if all of us with full driving licences were to take the time to be assessed again, how many of us would actually pass the test?
