Fashion Design Basics

Do I have to know how to design clothes to go to fashion school?
I am applying to either one or two (Parson’s and/or FIDM) for fashion design. I know how to sketch my designs, but I do not know how to actually design them. I know how to use a sewing machine and the basics, but past that I am lost. I was wondering if you must know how to design clothes before enrolling or if the school has basic beginner classes or something.
I’m asking because I know you must be able to sketch to get in. Thanks.
Reputable fashion schools usually require you to present a portfolio of pictures of your designs as part of the admissions process.
Parsons is one of the two best fashion schools in the nation, along with FIT, which is also in New York City.
FIDM is a for-profit proprietary school. Accordingly its degrees are usually given little or no respect by other schools and employers.
Fashion is so competitive a field that if I wanted a career in it and were not admitted to FIT or Parsons, I would choose another career. FIT and Parsons are the best paths to the very competitive summer internships which are essential to finding a job.
