Flower Design Wedding Rings

Why doesn’t anyone get/give gold engagement rings anymore?
My engagement ring (I haven’t recieved it yet though) is gold and has one big diamon in the middle with 4 other diamonds that circle around it, it’s hard to explain but it creates a flower type design. And one of the smaller diamonds is on a seperate band so it will be given to me on our wedding day as my wedding band. I have noticed though, that most people are getting silver, or white gold rings. My promise ring (I got it when I was younger) is white gold, but my boyfriend wants gold wedding rings.
I love white gold but the quality of white gold today sucks so much that the majority of white gold settings have a feint yellow cast to them, so to hide that the industry plates them in rhodium….when the rhodium wears off you see how truly off color the white gold is…..yuck.
My first marriage’s engagement ring was a white gold setting…back in 1974 when the white gold being made was still decent….Had it for 22 years before I sold it, never yellowed, was never plated…it was as silvery-gray (the TRUE color of good white gold, not the shiny rhodium plating bright silver-white) as the day I received it and I wore it all the time.
So now I only buy white gold if there is no plating and I see the real color of the piece…and that means antiques/estate pieces made about 30 years ago and before.
As far as yellow gold, the ‘rage’ is white…which is why jewelers are selling inferior quality white gold plated over…..to squeeze as much profit out of the demand as they can until the tide turns…and it will, and yellow gold becomes the rage and white gold is seen as old fashioned and dated.
It’s like the fashion industry and hemlines…they go up, they go down….white gold…then everyone wants yellow, then white..then yellow……and the public follow like sheep.
How many people truly prefer white gold compared to those who have to have it because it’s the curent ‘trend’ is anyone’s guess.
Anyway I am no metal snob & I look good in both yellow & white…and I have been wearing white mostly since the days it was considered ‘YER GRANDMAW’S RING” lol since I really do prefer it however, because most of my fine jewelry collection is white, I want my wedding rings to stand out (I recently remarried) so my bridal set is yellow gold. There is something sweetly traditional about a polished yellow gold wedding band and despite what some of the young whippersnappers may say, fine yellow gold never truly goes out of style among those who collect fine jewelry pieces.
