Fluid Design Derby

Entering the Arena: the Samsung Jet S8000
In buying a mobile phone, different people will have varying considerations. However, important factors such as design and performance will surely be near the top of every list. This is where the new Samsung Jet S8000 stands out. It is able to combine a sleek and stylish design with high performance which made this mobile phone miss out on the Smartphone category by a only few points.
A Thrilling Derby
There is very little point arguing the fact that the S8000 is actually Samsung’s direct response to the LG Arena KM9000. It is however worth saying that Samsung has done a noble effort in its attempt to outclass the highly successful LG Arena. In terms of design it would be quite difficult to tell the two apart if not for the manufacturer’s logo on top of the screen. However, Samsung outdid LG by installing an upgraded version of the 3D user interface on the S8000 that allows for a smoother and more fluid navigation experience. Most of the other features are pretty much on level ground such as the 5-Megapixel camera (except that the S8000 is capable of D1 video recording), GPS, and Wi-Fi connectivity. All in all, it’s a pretty good match.
The S8000 sports a 3.1-inch AMOLED touch screen that has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and is able to display up to 16 million colours. Although the LG Arena makes use of a capacitive touch screen, the S8000’s resistive screen (combined with Samsung’s proprietary AMOLED technology) actually provides a more vivid and easy-to-navigate touch display.
Key Features
The S8000 also has a very powerful 800MHz Qualcomm processor as well as the latest TouchWiz UI integrated with Media Gate 3D. As for the camera, both devices have a 5-Megapixel snapper with most of the latest features available such as geo-tagging, autofocus, and an LED flash. Although the Arena’s camera does have image stabilization, the S8000 makes up for it by having other impressive functions such as wide dynamic range and blink, smile, & face detection.
And Then Some
Also included in its long list of functions are a few more impressive features that truly make the S8000 a very formidable contender. Data connectivity is one of them as the S8000 provides support for GPRS (Class 12), HSCSD, EDGE (Class 12), 3G (HSDPA, 3.6 Mbps), WLAN (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g), and Bluetooth (version 2.1 with A2DP). The S8000 also provides its users with an excellent multimedia experience by having a pre-installed multimedia player that is fully compatible with the most popular music and video file formats. Also on board is a GPS receiver with A-GPS support as well as a pre-installed Route 66 GPS application.
