Some Simple Design Concepts for the New Webmasters

Normal 0

Creating and maintaining your own website can be a rewarding and at the same time, an exhausting experience. The first challenge is finding the right design that fits the theme of your website. It’s a good thing that there are a lot of tools available for non-HTML savvy people who want to create their own website. There are interesting tools like SiteGrinder which is a Photoshop plugin that helps you create a mock-up of the website and export it into usable HTML format. Sitegrinder 2 works perfectly. There are even online HTML editing tools that do not require installation on your computer.

With all these options to help you create your website, it’s best if you get yourself familiarized with some sound design concepts that are applicable to any kind of website. Here are a few design tips that can help you see what to look out for in terms of design flaws.

· Integrate an intuitive structure – When you create a website, you’ll most probably need to create several subpages to avoid putting all of your content in one page. This makes your website more organized and less cluttered. Because of this, you’ll need to decide where to put your navigation links to get to those subpages. It’s best to keep the navigational links in one area because it can get pretty annoying if you have to scan the page every time you want to navigate to a different area in your website.

· Go easy on the blinkers – Blinking and moving animated gifs can be cute but sometimes they’re really helping make your website look professional. This is especially true if you have several of them in a page. Seeing so many moving elements on a webpage can be glaring and annoying for most people.

· Minimize the use of background music – Using background music on your website may sound cool but you have to think about the practical side of this. You have no way of finding out whether your visitors like the kind of music you put in the background, and it also makes the page load slower. Besides, some people might be listening to their own music while surfing the internet. If your music plays simultaneously with theirs, they might just close off the browser to stop the racket. Be discriminating when it comes to this, although of course it’s still your choice if you want to put background music on your page.

· Use graphics sparingly – It’s great to integrate graphics in your web design because it helps make your website visually pleasing. You may just want to make sure that you don’t put too much graphics on a page. Balance the number of photos and graphics to how much content you have typed in so as not to distract your readers. Graphics also take longer to load, especially if you pick some that are not optimized for websites.

If you keep these design principles in mind, chances are you’ll be able to make websites that are at least not hard to look at. Eventually, as you learn more about graphic and web design, you’ll pick up a few more useful things to apply on your own website.
