Graphic Design Yellow Pages

Sending out unsolicited proposals?
I’ve recently started a fledgling web design company. At present I’m focusing on small businesses in my area which need cheep web and graphic design to help build up my name.
Using the yellow pages I’ve found a dozen business to start with who have youth oriented services/products, but no web presence. My plan is to send out a letter to these businesses.
However, I have no idea what the put in the letter.
1) Who do I address it to?
2) How should my letter be designed
3) How formal should it be
Thanks!
1. Who do I address it to?
You should be able to find a copy of Thomas Register for your state at the public library. In it you will find the names of every company doing business in the state along with the address, phone number, and the names and titles of some of the key personnel.
2. How should my letter be designed?
While at the library pick up some books on business letters and/or sales letters. Look them over and pick out the ones you like the best.
3. How formal should it be?
See the answer to 2 above. The letters you like will reflect your personality and those are the ones you should use as models for your own sales letters.
Two other items:
DO NOT MAKE UNSOLICITED PHONE CALLS! Unless you are a politician or a charity you run the risk of placing a call to a number on the federal do not call list. The penalty for doing so is a fine of up to $11,000 per call! Unless you have done business with the person at the phone number you are calling within the past year or they have said (preferably in writing) that they are willing to accept calls from you don’t call.
The other thing is that all of the books I have seen on selling say that prospects don’t buy until they have been contacted something like 7 times.
Finally, why not contact the program chairs for your local service clubs and ask them about doing a program on the benefits of a web site for their members (most of whom will be local business people). If they say yes be careful not to make your presentation a blatant sales pitch — don’t worry they will realize you are doing it in the hopes of making some sales.
Hope this helps
