Home Design For The Internet Age
The internet age has changed the way we live. Many homes now have more computers than they have telephones and televisions. The living room is no longer used as a family gathering place. Instead, it is used as a TV watching room and occasionally as an entertainment room. Interior designers and architects, as a consequence, are rethinking the functions of the various rooms in the house.
In the living areas, kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms are now often designed as one large room instead of three separate areas. The line of demarcation between the kitchen and the dining room may be a kitchen peninsula with a breakfast bar. This allows whoever is working in the kitchen to listen to music or watch a TV show while they work or catch up with the kids when they sit down for a snack at the breakfast bar after school.
The only thing that defines a dining room is the fact that the dining table occupies a certain amount of space in the living area. This arrangement is perfect for entertaining and socializing. When guests are over, after dining together they can relax in the living room, hang out at the breakfast bar or just remain at the table.
In their day-to-day lives, each member of the family needs a computer and an internet connection. They need them for study, work and for communications as well as for personal entertainment. Having just one area as a study or computer room just doesn’t make any sense anymore. The most efficient area for study or work in the home is the bedroom.
As a result of the increasing need for private working areas in family homes, architects are now making the bedrooms larger. In addition, furniture designers are turning their creative talents to making computer workstations that are both highly functional and stylish. A corner workstation, for example, may be large enough to contain bookshelves, a desk and even an entertainment center and may even look like an antique piece of furniture instead of a modern work station.
Thankfully, if you are building a new home, you no longer need to sacrifice that king sleigh bed you adore in order to fit a working area in your bedroom. Architects are including space for generous sized working areas in bedrooms. With so many people now working and studying from home, the bedroom is the logical place to include a computer and work station so that family members can work in privacy.
Having space for sleigh beds in their rooms is not a priority for young children. Furniture designers have come up with the perfect solution to space problems in children’s bedrooms in the form of loft beds. When you put a loft in a growing child’s room, you instantly find you have more than enough space in the room for the computer desk he needs for school.
It’s about time that architecture and interior design caught up with the internet age. If you are just ‘making do’ and shifting your laptops around from room to room, think about taking advantage of the new architecture and design innovations.
