Young Girls Dance To Single Ladies And Spark A Debate

The World Of Dance is a nine-city, across-the nation dance competition tour that is supposed to “celebrate urban dance.” Some are wondering, though, if World Of Dance competitors went too far when a video of 8 and 9 year old girls dancing to Put A Ring On It hit the internet. The dance troupe doesn’t seem to have won the instant cash loans prize of $500, even though the crowd went wild. Why is this particular dance such a big issue?

World of Dance competition

Entry to the World of Dance competition is relatively open, with different divisions. Individuals and groups compete in divisions that are separated by group type and age. World of Dance is supposed to be a “modern” dance competition that “embraces urban dance” rather than ballroom or traditional dance competition. The World of Dance Tour uses corporate “sponsorships” and a festival atmosphere to draw in observers. The World of Dance tour is also a chance for fashion designers to market to the billion-dollar youth and teen market.

The World of Dance controversy

Before this controversy made it to the news, most people had never heard of the World of Dance. A video of five girls dancing to Beyonce’s “Put a Ring On It” has catapulted the competition to just about every news station. The girls wore halter tops and hotpants and were definitely shaking it. The girl’s parents and event promoters point out the dance moves came not even from Beyonce’s video, but instead from Alvin and the Chipmunks Squeakquel that was recently released.

How World of Dance has reacted

The World of Dance tour has, along with the parents of these girls, gone on record about the dance controversy. World Of Dance spokespeople says that the girls “did nothing provocative.” The parents point out that this performance was never intended for an international audience – just for the competition. Tell me what your opinion is. Did the “Single Ladies Girls” and their coach step over the line? Or did these girls just re-perform something they saw in a kid’s movie, intending it much more innocently than it has been taken?
