Junior Interior Designer Salary

careers in art (graphic design/interior designer)?

soo im a junior in HS and im thinking this would be a cool job and id enjoy it..but the thing is i’m not that involved with art in school….i like art and use photo editing at home for like MY pictures and stuff.. but the only classes i’ve taken for art is advertising, photography, and general art. I don’t have a portfolio and don’t know what to put in one. Am i too late to start thinking about all this for a career?

id like to make things for magazines…cd’s etc..

also would i have a better chance of making a better salary if i moved to a larger city??

thanks

You should definitely create a portfolio; this is imperative if you are going to apply to an art or design school for college. You should get more involved with art; sign up for more art classes for your senior year. Even if you don’t take classes in school (although you should) you can also take art classes outside of school at your local art association.

If you are really confused about a portfolio, when you visit colleges, ask about what they look for in a portfolio. You can also just put something together of any work you have done, and attend a National Portfolio Day event, where art colleges from all over the country send representatives to critique your portfolio. Here, you can learn what you need in a portfolio, what you need to improve on. http://www.portfolioday.net/

Also, it is true that in many cases those who work in larger cities make a better salary compared to someone who works in some obscure area, but another thing to take note of is that it is harder to make it in a big city. With a better salary comes A LOT more competition for that salary. In general, any arts career is hard to break into and very competitive.
