Kids Design Clothes Kit

What is the best way to tie dye?
I want to throw a tie dying party for my step-daughter this summer. I have seen those tie dying kits at craft stores but I’m curious if they work better than or the same as using regular clothing dyes. Also if anyone has tips for making cool designs or how to make the colors last longer and come out brighter that would be great. FYI the party will consist of mostly 9-10 year olds, so any tips on how to make it easier for kids is great too
Consider tie-dyeing with thin-bodied fabric paints… you’ll get nice bright colors. Some ideas here:

If you’re going to use dyes, fiber-reactive dyes on mercerized cotton or rayon will give the brightest, cleanest colors instead of the muddy tones you get with Rit and similar union dyes.

If you’re worried about toxicity, you can tie dye with Koolaid or food colors, but you’ll need to use nylon, wool or silk fabric. http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/drinkmix.shtml
