3 Easy Techniques For Painting Your Walls
The walls of a room can be painted using several different painting techniques to add some quick style to a room. There are some painting techniques that can help make a DIY paint job look as if they were done professionally.
Before any type of painting on your walls is started, you must make sure to be prepared. This means that all your supplies are ready, your walls are prepped by filling in crack or holes, and that you tape off trim and windows with blue painter’s tape. You will need certain tools to accomplish either painting technique, so make sure you pick these up as well.
Rag Painting Technique
The rag painting technique does away with brushes and rollers. Instead, any type of cotton rag or a plain old t-shirt can be used to apply paint to the wall. The wall will have a marble effect on it because of this technique. To do rag painting:
Immerse the rag in a container of paint and shake off any excess.
The rag should then be dabbed onto the wall, applying paint in any pattern you want: however, make sure that you don’t spread the pattern too much.
A more creative touch can be added by applying a darker base color and then ragging on a lighter color of paint.
Sponge Painting Technique
A good technique used for giving walls interest and depth is sponge painting or sponging. You can’t sponge paint a wall without first applying a base color. For the sponge painting technique:
Take a regular sponge or sea sponge and immerse it into any paint or glaze of your choice.
Begin on the outside of one of the walls and dab your sponge in a random manner.
You can complete all the walls with the sponge technique, or only do one wall if that’s what you feel like doing.
Color Washing Technique
The painting technique of color washing will add a subtle finish to the wall that gives the appearance of floating color. This technique is great if you have a wall with quite a few flaws that you want to conceal. Since you need to build up layers for the full effect this technique can take longer than others. To do color washing:
Paint the wall in a base color you want and the wait for it to dry.
Then a complimentary or slightly different color will need to be used to apply another layer of paint.
Only use a paint brush when painting this layer and apply paint in all different directions, going over your strokes in order to have the base color show through in random areas.
More than one layer of painting can be done like this if you desire for another color to show on the walls as well.
These painting techniques can be used in any room, from a bathroom to living room. From a bathroom to a living room, any of these techniques can be used in any single room. Not only are they a great way to add style to the walls, but they will also help liven up the room.
