How to Decorate a Black and White Retro Kitchen
A great theme for a kitchen is black-and-white retro. Even though this retro style goes way back, through the years its become a classic. If a retro kitchen theme seems right for you, then here are some suggestions to get you started.
Use Red as an Accent Color in the Kitchen
By using red as an accent color to the black and white scheme, you will make your retro kitchen look more authentic. Adding touches of red will bring some color and interest into the dcor, yet will still help you keep the retro feeling. Have you ever seen a black-and-white diner or kitchen from years ago? They almost always incorporate red into the design. Its your decision how much red you end up using in the retro kitchen. Save the red for smaller items, like window treatments or placemats, or use it for bigger items, like the color of a wall or a backsplash.
Flooring Options for a Retro Kitchen
For a retro kitchen, a black-and-white tiled floor will probably be your best option. You can create any number of alternating patterns of black and white tiles that will enhance the retro look, giving the room the feel of an old diner. Of course, you can also find laminate flooring with a black-and-white checkered pattern if you want to go a cheaper route. In a retro kitchen design, its usually best to avoid wood floors. But if youre set on that type of flooring, then opt for a darker-colored wood. You should be able to find at least one area rug with black, white, or red in it to place on top of the wood floor and complement the retro look.
Cabinets for a Retro Kitchen
Its also a good idea to stay away from wood cabinets, just like the flooring. Instead, paint the cabinets white. You might even consider painting them black, depending on your wall color and how daring you feel. Retro pull handles in silver make great accents for the cabinets. A great way to get really creative is to make your own one-of-a-kind cabinet pulls, hand painting them with a checkered or geometric design.
Choosing Appliances for a Retro Kitchen
White was the standard for refrigerators back in the day, and thus most kitchens, in turn, had white appliances. Nowadays, you have many different appliance options, so you can play around with them a bit. For instance, stainless steel appliances would fit the style of a retro kitchen well. If you havent used that much black in the rest of the room, you might also go with black appliances. After all, you dont need to completely limit yourself to retro options, but rather you can give your black-and-white retro kitchen a modern twist.
A black-and-white retro theme in the kitchen can really lend a unique look to the area. Just be sure to keep the room comfortable and inviting as well as stylish, as your family will be spending a lot of time in there.
