Where the occupation comes up against its biggest obstacle is what makes it so easy to enter. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 25% of all developers are freelancers, and their competition is usually the next generation of kids coming up. As such it’s an extremely cut throat market, particularly in the current economy.
Because of this economy, it’s not uncommon for a young developer to start, freelance, at $10.00 an hour. That’s why it probably wouldn’t hurt for a student to also take a course or two in self-marketing and networking. With that kind of savvy and some successful projects under one’s belt, the average developer can make $60,000 a year. Top level developers can command $100 an hour.
In truth, what a developer must remember is the astronomical growth of the web and Online Technology Management Degrees. As stated in the beginning, the number of sites out there will increase to one billion this decade. The Bureau expects because of this that there is a need for nearly 40% more developers than there currently are.
