MANAGEMENT PROCESS & MANAGERIAL ROLE

MANAGEMENT PROCESS  What is management?  What do managers do?  What challenges do managers at different levels face?

Management may be defined as a process whereby scarce resources (human, material, & financial) are combined to achieve organizational goals. Without management, people would pursue their own objectives independently and this would lead to waste & inefficiency.

Concept of Mgmt & its Significance:

 “Management is art and science of decision-making &leadership”-D.J.Clough  Mgmt is art of getting things done through &with people in formally organized groups.-Koontz

 Management is getting work done through others. Managers have to be concerned with efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace. Efficiency is getting work done with a minimum of effort, expense, or waste. Effectiveness is accomplishing tasks that help full organizational objectives, such as customer service and satisfaction.

 Mgmt consists of all organizational activities that involve goal formation & accomplishment, performance appraisal, and the development of an operating philosophy that ensures the organizations survival within the system. -W.J.Duncan

Mgmt is the coordination of all resources through the process of planning, organizing, directing & controlling in order to attain stated goals. -Henry L. Sisk

Significance:

 1. Mgmt determines the objective of any organization.  2. It is required from family to nation.  3. It achieves objectives of any organization.  4. It coordinates the individual efforts into a team. (1+1=11) Result of Team Efforts  5.It ensures efficient use of resources.  6. It deals with human behavior under dynamic conditions.  7. It is crucial in economic & social development.  8. It is concerned with Ideas, Things and People.  9. Its presence in the form of results can be felt.

Management of Ideas: Creativity implies generating of new ideas & innovation means transforming ideas into viable realities & utilities.

Management of Things: It refers to the mobilization, allocation & deployment of materials, machinery, technology & other facilities to convert ideas into results & performance.

Management of People: It means procurement, development, maintenance, & integration of human working in the organization.

Managerial Roles:

 1. Figurehead- Making Speeches, bestowing honors, welcoming officials, visitors etc  2. Leader- Motivator  3. Liaison- Maintains mutually beneficial relations with other organizations, governments, industry groups etc.  4. Monitor/Controller  5. Disseminator- Calling staff meeting & transmitting information & judgment to the members of organization, forwarding mail etc.  6. Spokesman  7. Entrepreneur-Ex. Manager Launching a feasibility study for setting up a new plant.  8. Disturbance Handler  9.Resource Allocator- Approves budgets & Schedule & sets priorities & distributes resources.  10. Negotiator-Negotiates with suppliers, dealers, trade unions etc.

Managerial Skils:

 1. Technical Skill-Operating Mgmt level.  2. Human Skills-Ability to work effectively with other people both as individual & as member of a group. (Middle Mgmt Level)  3. Conceptual Skills- It comprises the ability to see the whole organization & the interrelationships between its parts. (Top Mgmt Level)  4. Diagnostic Skills- It is the ability to cut through unimportant details & quickly get to the heart of the problem ie. Logical thinking, analytical reasoning & creativity.
