Should the same type of switch be used at each layer of the hierarchical design?

Type as in Level 2 or Level 3, or type as in 2980G or 2948G.
You do not have to have *identical* switches. The only important consideration is the spanning tree root which should be a backbone switch, and whether you are using level two or level three. A Level 3 switch acts more as a router, and a level two switch just switches.
